Krishnamurthy Rao, 19, an engineering student who resides on the premises of the studio was just returning home after eating outside when he saw the studio go up in flames. Though no major artiste besides Khan was present on the scene when the fire broke out, actress Neena Gupta had a fortuitous escape from the inferno: she had just stepped out of the sets to feed her three-month-old child. Most of the victims were unit members from Bombay and the dead included four junior artistes. Sanjay Khan himself was trapped in the fire and like a true captain waited for most of the crew to rush out before he himself staggered out - his body badly burnt. The large room had only two exits and one of them was blocked by shooting equipment. The speed and intensity of the fire gave little chance to the 100-odd crew who were on the spot. According to the studio employees, Sanjay was to take shots of fireworks that accompanied the wedding. The scene was that of the wedding of Tipu Sultan, and was being shot in what is called the 'C room of the studio, a cavernous 60 ft by 120 ft enclosure which was set up as a durbarhall. The fire broke out late in the evening of February 8 when Khan had just commenced shooting the second episode. Tipu Sultanwould have had a running time of 40 hours, over five months. More than 100 artistes and crew were brought in from Bombay to help the local talent. The mahurat for the 52-part serial - estimated to cost over Rs 4 crore - was held on October 2 at the Lalit Mahal Palace and everything about the serial was done in epic proportions.

Last fortnight, a devastating blaze swept through Premier Studios in Mysore, where actor-director Sanjay Khan was shooting a tele-serial based on Bhagwan Gidwani's historical novel The Sword of Tipu Sultan.
